self directing professional - emotional intelligenceThere has been a lot of buzz around recently with the introduction of our new programme and book ‘The Self Directing Professional’. Several people at the launch saw the potential of this approach which supports our work on Leading and Developing High Performance.

They immediately signed up for the programme and the feedback from their clients has been that it is just what they are looking for. So what is the difference? This time we are focusing on the people and what makes high fliers fly so high.

What is it that makes some people successful very quickly, and make it look easy, while other people who work very hard struggle to achieve the same result?

Derek Biddle and Ali Stewart set about researching this in a major UK organisation and were fascinated by what came out. That research continued with other organisations and, guess what, the findings were the same. Had they stumbled upon yet another body of knowledge that would help mere employees become high fliers. Yes they had and this time it consisted of one key attitude and a set of 7 skills that made the difference.

The successful ones had naturally aquired this mindset and skills, not becasue they had good leadership, not because they had high IQ – but because they had a high EQ or emotional intelligence. What did this mean? It meant that they took personal responsibility for what happened to them, took charge of their learning and life and practised being Self Directing.

Any manager knows that it is much easier to help these people grow and develop but perhaps the most important aspect is that this key attitude and 7 skills can be studied and learnt by anyone.

Look out for more on The Self Directed Professional on the blog in future and if you want to buy the book or are interested in the training programme either as a development specialist or as an organisation please contact Ali Stewart.

Exciting news! The next 2-day intensive accreditation programme is being delivered by Ali Stewart on 18-19 July 2011. Likely venue will be in or near Salisbury which will be confirmed nearer the date.

Ali has been very busy recently delivering the programme in St Lucia to a hotel resort and distillery with superb results. I am looking to post some of her stories that came out of the experience. For example when the gate man shook her hand because the owner had said ‘Have a good weekend’ with sincerity for the first time and he had noticed a change in the atmosphere.

The cost for this training is £1497 + VAT, and if you book by 24 June you get an earlybird discount of just over 30%, so that’s £997 + VAT. The price includes materials, venue costs and full catering for the duration. Overnight accommodation is not included.

Please contact us to discuss the programme or book your place on this increasingly popular accreditation.

When the Insights Discovery® colour energies and horses come together something magical happens …. especially under the expert guidance of Beth Duff

leadership & Horses - Paint your horse‘The Red Horse Speaks’ event on 12 May 11 was facilitated by equine assisted learning experts Beth Duff and Ann Romberg, along with Lucy Wilkins at a beautiful farm in deepest Somerset. We were encouraged to engage with our colour energies to get the best result from the horses – using a combination of precision, empathy, clarity of direction and purpose, with passion and enthusiasm. If you get it wrong, you have to deal with half a ton of horse which won’t budge! Engage the right energy for the situation and you’re away. If people in your life or business are stuck and won’t budge, maybe try a different tack!

I particularly liked what Ann said, that horses are our “mirrors and mentors and lead us to mastery”. They reflect back what we’re doing, teach us and then allow us to shine! How wonderful is that?

If you try to apply paint on a chestnut coloured horse, red paint shows up but green doesn’t. (we had to resort to white!) We realised how powerful a metaphor that was for what happens in real life with these two colour energies! In Insights colour energy terms, Fiery Red energy is competitive and demanding and likes to be seen and heard and Earth Green energy is more patient and relaxed, preferring to observe, reflect and remain in the background.

Insights Discovery - Exploring colour energies with HorsesWhen asked to think of a goal or vision we would like to create and then paint it, we could just as easily have done it on brown paper but brown paper doesn’t give you feedback or grief! Our chestnut horse, Mabon, did, shaking its head and pawing the ground when we suggested ‘leadership’, then laughing and nodding (I’m serious!) when we moved onto ‘creative marketing’ and how we get more people engaging with this wonderful medium for learning about personality. (It was definitely easier for the other team with Bilbo Baggins and his colouring. He’d just been groomed and was looking gorgeous – and they didn’t have to contend with the local press taking photos!)

‘Coach Like a Horse’ on 13 May 11 took us deeper into team dynamics – or horse rituals – what we saw playing out before our eyes was what we have seen many times before in our client organisations, departments and teams … but with greater clarity and understanding, of egos, pecking orders, how much energy is expended by some and how little by others to achieve the same result.

Ali Stewart at Leadership event with horsesThen encouraging a horse to walk with you without a leading rope and stand on a podium for you, because he wants to, helps you to understand and tap into ‘someone’s’ internal motivation to succeed. The metaphor is stark, if you can do this with a proud and beautiful horse, you can do this with a truculent employee.

The combination of Beth’s and Ann’s careful coaching, and Lilias’s wonderful horses and farm (with views over the whole of Somerset!) made this a stunning event. You can check them out here:

Your Personality Colours Your Leadership Style…

Your personality colours your leadership style…. because you leak who you are into everything you do!

When delivering our Leading & Developing High Performance training programme to leaders or trainers, we always start with personality.

To understand others, you first have to understand yourself, and great leaders recognise this. We underpin the programme with the most profound and beautiful personality tool, Insights Discovery®, designed by father and son team, Andi Lothian and Andy Lothian, based in Dundee.

Driven by a desire to make the established theories of Dr Carl Jung even more accessible to people, the Lothians built this tool simply and powerfully on just 4 colours, with an incredible accuracy rate of 96%. From 4 colours, you can then go as deep as you like – 8 types, 16 types, 72 types, the less conscious, the shadow and so on, as deep as you want to go.

The perfect simplicity of the 4 colours makes it fun and accessible to everyone, not just leaders but children too … and even animals have colours! As my young son announced,

“Mummy, I think Harriet (tabby cat) is Red, Blue, Yellow, Green, do you?”. I said, “ I think you’re right, darling, but tell me why you think that.”

Thoughtfully he said, well … she is very demanding about what she wants, she wants it now (a stroke, food, to be let out) and always wants to take a swipe at you (Fiery Red); she is very particular about when she is fed, always miaowing and asking for her food at exactly the same time every day and needs you to pay attention and give it to her, otherwise she gets in a huff (Cool Blue), she can be quite entertaining and funny when she’s playing and in a ‘chatty’ mood (Sunshine Yellow), and occasionally she does notice when you’re sad, she purrs gently to calm you down and cuddles up with you (Earth Green).

Personality profiles - what is your psychological preference?

As leaders, the ability to tap into 4 colours is crucial. Typically we get stuck in our own preferred style according to our personality preferences, because for most of us, one or two colours are more dominant than the others. Discovering what it is like for you, could possibly by the turning point, as Pam Hothi has found out:

I would like to express my thanks to you for the wonderful report. I finally feel that someone understands me, but more importantly I understand myself! It was incredible reading this report as every part of it was me!! Its really helped me understand how I need to develop myself and I most certainly will be working on this.

I’ve been reflecting all weekend on how I can do things better but also all the positive aspects. I still can’t believe how true the report is, every word, sentence I could relate to, even my weakness’s were so true! Its truly amazing and I will be most definitely recommending people go through this process.

Once again, thank you so much. Finally, 37 years on, I get who I am!!:)

Kindest regards
Pam Hothi
